Trade unions to sue government over BCL Mine sale in Botswana

Botswana Federation for Public Sector Trade Unions (BOFEPUSO) intends to sue government for selling the country’s biggest copper producer BCL Mine.

Tobokani Rari, BOFEPUSO Secretary General told media on Thursday that government has never been transparent with the sale of the mine.

“The union federation will in two weeks hold a meeting where a decision will be taken to either sue government or hold protest against sale of public enterprises without being transparent,” Rari said.

BCL mine was closed last year resulting in more than 5,000 job losses.

Last week, Botswana offered BCL Mine to Emirates Investment House (EIH) for a token price of US$1(Pula 10) in an intricate deal that will see the Emirati firm taking over the liabilities of the mothballed mine, including the obligation to pay for the disputed 50% stake in Nkomati Mine.

Though government appears to be bullish on the EIH-BCL deal, doubts have emerged from industry players about the Emirati firm’s financial and technical capability to pull the deal through.
