The new President of the Republic of Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, appointed Ousmane Sonko as Prime Minister by decree a few hours after his inauguration on Tuesday, April 2, 2024. The leader of the Pastef party, who played a key role in his election, was unable to run for President.

According to a decree read on RTS, “Mr. Ousmane Sonko is appointed Prime Minister,” announced Oumar Samba Bâ, the Secretary-General of the Presidency of the Republic.

“I understand the importance of the trust he (President Faye) has placed in me,” said Ousmane Sonko on RTS, thanking him and guaranteeing his “loyalty” and “dedication.”

The new head of government affirmed that he will not let President Bassirou Diomaye Faye govern alone and bear “this heavy task.” Thus, he stated that “each one must give their best so that we can achieve the objectives we have set for Senegal, and not just for the president.”

According to Ousmane Sonko, this Pastef project belongs to every Senegalese citizen. “At the head of the team we will form, we will give everything we have and spare no effort to achieve what we promised the Senegalese people, which is rupture, progress, and definitive change for the better,” he promised.
