Several designers of the African diaspora, came from all corners of the world to showcase their individual talents and genuine interpretation of fashion-savviness during the fourth Africa Fashion Week New York held from July 18 to July 20, 2013 at Broad Street Ballroom, in Manhattan.
For these designers, fashion is a way to illustrate the multifaceted dynamic of beauty, culture, and heritage.
Models walked the runway, in fine embroidery, handwoven silks, eclectic color schemes, transparent panellings, ethereal floor length gowns and faux-hawks.
The fashion apparel showcased appeared to exceed the boundaries of African fashion further than ever before.
Coincidentally, this was and continues to be the objective of Africa Fashion Week founder, Adiat Disu. After attending ARISE Magazine’s African Fashion Collective show in February 2009 during New York Fashion Week, Disu strove to put the spotlight on even more talent: capable and gifted designers who required a platform to show the diversity of African fashion.
Years later, Disu has put out four fashion weeks and has given several designers the opportunity to make their mark on the fashion industry, putting African fashion on the map and ultimately enfranchising the name of African fashion around the globe.
