Five trailblazing women — including New York Beacon society columnist Audrey Bernard – were recognized for their accomplishments at the second annual Café Mocha “Celebrating Women” Brunch on June 16, 2012 in Manhattan.
Bernard, known as a premier chronicler of urban and African activities nationwide, received the Legends Media Award at the affair, which was held in the Audubon Ballroom at the Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center.
“You feel like you can’t have too many children,” said Bernard commenting on Legends Media Award. “This award is like having a new baby.”
But Bernard, who has received numerous awards during her career, said her passion for people has kept her going throughout her 25-plus years in the entertainment business.
“I love people, and I always tell them don’t let anyone define who you are, because Audrey is watching.”
The other four trailblazing women honored by Café Mocha were Deborah Williams, CEO of Her Game 2 Apparel, who was presented with the Game Changer Award; American Express Vice President Latraviette D. Smith, was the recipient of the Powerhouse Award; actress, author and activist Sheryl Lee Ralph received the Community Activist Award; and Essence magazine Editor-in-Chief Constance White, was selected for the Trailblazer Award.
The event included a special performance by Jessica Reedy and Alyson Williams.
Café Mocha – hosted by MC Lyte, Loni Love and Angelique Perrin – is a nationally syndicated radio show created by and for women of color airing every Saturday mornings on WBLS radio (107.5 FM) in New York.
