Six successful black women – Jacquie Lee, Lilias White, Malikha Mallette, Melba Moore, Mona Scott-Young, and Winsome Sinclair – recently shared their personal experiences and success strategies at a panel event titled An Evening with Women of Excellence in the Arts.
Hundreds of attendees, hungry for success, attended the intimate Women’s History Month panel and discussion focusing on the unique experiences of women in entertainment that took place at Manhattan’s Riverside Church in Morningside Heights on March 26, 2012.
Members of the panel, which was moderated by TV personality Havilah Malone, focused on their unique experiences in the entertainment field and shared advice with the audience. Suggestions included:
– Stay grounded, know who you are and let the world embrace who you are instead of trying to fit in.
– There is no secret to success but perseverance. If you want that door to open, keep kicking and pushing.
– The way you dress and carry yourself sends a message to those around you, including men. If you don’t want to be approached a certain way especially in the work environment, you have to send that message in the way you dress and carry yourself.
– To the younger generation, do your homework before approaching a successful woman and don’t expect her to give you on a silver platter what it took her years to build.
– And if you make it, surround yourself with true friends who will not be afraid to tell you the truth and help you stay grounded.
