Community members and elected officials gathered at 333 East 181st a year after the January 9th, 2022, tragic Bronx fire to remember the victims and honor the memory of Abdoulie Touray, the first Gambian to move into Twin Parks.

The Corner of East 181st and Folin Street is now co-named 17 Abdoulie Touray Way in honor of those who perished and Touray’s service to the Gambian Community.

The co-naming ceremony brought a glimpse of joy on a sad day where many hope to see the landlords held accountable for the seventeen lives lost and the countless others impacted.

Salim Drammeh, the president of the Gambian Youth Organization who raised more than a million dollars for the victims, was one of them.

“The fire in this building didn’t need to happen…,” said Drammeh. “We need to ensure that those who need to be held accountable for their negligence are held accountable so that this never happens again.”
