UN officials pick up a gardening trowel on Nelson Mandela Day

Following an informal meeting at the United-Nations, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was joined by M. John Ashe, President of the 68th session of the General Assembly, Baleka Mbete, Speaker of the National Assembly of South Africa, Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver, Reverend Jesse Jackson, Ambassador Kingsley Mamabolo, and Nelson Mandela’s grandson Mr. Kweku Mandela on 43rd street and 1st avenue for a Commemorative ceremony in celebration of Nelson Mandela Day on July 18, 2014.

The officials honored Nelson Mandela’s passion for gardening, by picking up a gardening trowel and caring for a tree located across the United Nations headquarters during a ceremony hosted in partnership with MillionTreesNYC.
