Tanzania: Tanzanians mark 53 years of independence

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (PANA) – Tanzanians Tuesday celebrated 53 years of independence of their mainland (formerly known as Tanganyika) from British colonial rule with a military parade, colourful callisthenics and other cultural performances, but a big question mark remained over why this country has wallowed in poverty all along.

President Jakaya Kikwete attended the celebrations at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam but made no public address.

“Anyone believing that Tanzania has not made any meaningful economic strides since Tanganyika’s independence in 1961 is neither fair nor honest,” said The Guardian in its editorial. “Similarly, anyone giving the country a 100 per cent pass mark on that score is not being realistic.”
