It was Barbara Teer’s vision to create a special night, “a night for showing appreciation, acknowledgement and praise” to members of the black community who had extraordinary vision and talent.
As Teer, the founder of the National Black Theatre recognized, “too many of us have gone without proper acknowledgement, appreciation and praise for too long.”
So it made sense that when Barbara Teer’s life of “activism through art and self-empowerment though theatre” ended, that her daughter Sade Lythcott took the helm.
On June 18, 2014, Sade Lythcott, CEO of NBT with Director of Theatre Arts Program Jonathan McCrory in tow honored nine multitalented leaders at the Dr. Barbara Teer’s National Black Theatre in Harlem.
This year’s honorees include:
Sonia Sanchez, 2014 Teer Pioneer Award
William L. Strickland, 2014 Teer Pioneer Award
James Haughton, 2014 Teer Pioneer Award
Ruben Santiago-Hudson, 2014 Adetunde Samuel Award
