South Africans celebrate Freedom Day

Nthabi and Nohlanhla, the picnic organizers

South Africans in New York celebrated Freedom day on April 28, 2012, during a picnic at the Riverbank State Park in Upper Manhattan.

What started last year with less than 10 friends is growing at a pace where the organizers Nthabi and Nohlanhla are contemplating renting a space next year.

Many families brought home made food to share and danced on South African tunes.

Freedom Day, a South African holiday celebrated on April 27, celebrates freedom and commemorates the first post-apartheid elections held on that day in 1994.
