The New York Urban League hosted its 47th Annual Frederick Douglass Awards Dinner on May 16, 2012 at the Mandarin Hotel in Manhattan, honoring three individuals and Apple Metro Inc., the New York metropolitan area franchisee for Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar.

Apple Metro Chairman/CEO Zane Tankel accepted the league’s Frederick Douglass Medallion for the Applebee’s firm. New York Times columnist Charles Blow and singer/songwriter Kem were also presented with the Frederick Douglass award.

Michelle Cahill, vice president of National Programs at the Carnegie Corp., received the organization’s Ann S. Kheel Award.

Flutist Bobbi Humphrey, also known as the “First Lady of the Flute,” performed during the dinner, which was hosted by WNBC-TV news anchor David Ushery. “Soul Queen” auctioneer Audrey Smaltz, president of The Ground Crew event support company, coordinated the dinner’s live auction.

The New York Urban League is committed to helping students attend college and helping adults find good jobs.
