New-York based activist Ousmane Tounkara explains why Senegalese investigative journalist Pape Alé Niang is still in detention

In our latest Africa in Harlem Live, New-York based Senegalese activist Ousmane Tounkara explains why investigative journalist Pape Alé Niang was arrested on November 6, 2022, by the Police and why he has yet to be released.

Niang, who started a hunger strike on December 2, 2022, is facing three charges: disclosure of information to harm the national defense, concealment of administrative and military documents, and dissemination of false news likely to discredit public institutions.

The arrest occurred a day after the journalist discussed in a Youtube live an internal police report detailing what seems to be a setup to convict Senegalese opposition leader Ousmane Sonko of Adji Sarr’s alleged rape.
