Zindzi Mandela and Josina Machel, the daughters of former South African president and human rights activist Nelson Mandela and Graca Machel represented their parents during the 2013 South-South Award ceremony held on Sunday, September 22, 2013 at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York.

Zindzi Mandela received the Humanitarian Achievement Award presented to Nelson Mandela for his outstanding leadership for human rights and development while Josina Machel received the Humanitarian Achievement Recognition dedicated to her mother for her tireless advocacy for education, children’s welfare, and culture.

The annual South-South Awards, created to honor and celebrate the achievement of countries in the Global South, also honored the Primer Minister of Fiji, Josaia Bainimarama; the President of Costa Rica, H.E. Laura Chinchilla Miranda; His Royal Highness Khalifa Bin Salman Al-Khalifa, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain and vocalist David Paich.
