Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) – Madagascar is back at the African Union (AU) after the Peace and Security Council (PSC) Monday lifted the sanctions imposed on the country for an unconstitutional change in government, an AU source said.
The PSC’s decision to lift the suspension of Madagascar from the continental body since 2010 followed the country’s “successful political transition” which ended January 14, 2014 with the announcement of the final polls results.
Madagascar’s Special Electoral Court (CES) has announced the final results of the second round of the presidential poll, saying Mr. Hery M. Rajaonarimampianina Rakotoarimanana was duly elected as the country’s new President.
The AU had earlier commended the Malagasy as well as political actors and institutions for their commitment, which has made it possible to bring the country’s transition process to a successful end.
In a statement, the AU urged the people of the Indian Ocean island nation “to continue to demonstrate the same commitment and the same sense of responsibility to consolidate the remarkable progress that has been recorded and thus facilitate a sustainable exit from crisis”.
It also appealed to the international community to support Madagascar’s efforts towards socio-economic recovery and national reconciliation.
