Haitian leaders and community members reveal newly named 2/5 subway station Newkirk Ave – Little Haiti

On November 18, 2021, Assemblymember Rodneyse Bichote Hermelyn, Senator Kevin Parker, and Haitian community members gathered in Little Haiti, in Brooklyn, on the anniversary of the Battle of Vertières, for the reveal of the newly named 2/5 subway station Newkirk Ave – Little Haiti.

The Battle of Vertières liberated enslaved African labor brought on the Island by the French to sustain their sugar production. Under the leadership of Toussaint L’Ouverture and Jean-Jacques Dessalines, they ousted the French and created Haiti.

A celebration of Haitian culture through dance and music featuring Makandal drummers, Bianca and Zetwal followed the reveal.
