The Gathering for Justice hosted a conversation with Cyntoia Brown Long, activist and author of Free Cyntoia My Search for Redemption in the American Prison System on November 14, 2019 at the Park Avenue Christian Church in Manhattan.

During a fireside chat with The Gathering for Justice President Carmen Perez, the author spoke about the overwhelming support she received from her mother, her now husband Jaime Lynn Long, stars like Rihanna and the general public that led to her release from prison.

But getting help when she needed it was not always easy. Cyntoia Brown Long shared with the public how as early as elementary school being medicated was the only support she could get from the school administration despite her mother’s repeated cries for help.

Brown-Long also recalled how she was the only one sent to jail after getting in trouble with two other classmates who happened to be white during her years at an alternative school.

A book signing followed the conversation hosted by The Gathering for Justice.

The Gathering for Justice, founded by Harry Belafonte in 2005, is a social justice organization whose mission is to build a movement to end child incarceration while working to eliminate the racial inequities that permeate the justice system.
