Addis Ababa, Ethiopia  – Underlining its emphasis on having a people-driven organisation in line with the established tradition, the African Union Commission (AUC) Thursday invited members of the African civil society and Diaspora to apply for participation as observers at the next AU Summit.

The 22nd Ordinary Session of the AU Assembly of Heads of State and Government will be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 24-31 January 2014, with its central theme on Agriculture and Food Security in Africa, said the Commission.

Also, the same theme will be the focus of the Assembly’s 23rd Ordinary Session, which is slated for Libreville, Gabon, in the middle of the year.

On 16 July 2012, the Assembly proclaimed 2014 the ‘Year of Agriculture and Food Security’.

Meanwhile, the AUC has announced that the 27th Ordinary Session of the Permanent Representative Committee of Ambassadors (PRC) will be held 24-25 January 2014; 24th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council will take place 27-28 January 2014 and the 22nd Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government will be on 30-31 January 2014.

Members of the African civil society community and Diaspora, whose presence and contribution would be of a great relevance and value addition vis-à-vis the theme of the Summit, must submit their application to the AUC before 18 Oct. 2013.

“No application will be considered after the deadline,” the Commission warned.
