AAI salutes women in leadership

Her Excellency President Joyce Banda of the Republic of Malawi receiving the AAI Award for Championing Women’s Rights and Business Leadership

The Africa America Institute honored Africa’s two female heads of state Her Excellency President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of the Republic of Liberia and Her Excellency President Joyce Banda of the Republic of Malawi during its 28th Annual Gala held at the Hyatt Hotel on September 26, 2012.

President Sirleaf received the AAI African National Achievement Award for Literacy to Support Life Skills for her efforts in rebuilding Liberia’s national education system while Her Excellency President Joyce Banda of the Republic of Malawi received the AAI Award for Championing Women’s Rights and Business Leadership for her commitment to empower women and youth through business and education

Other honorees include Maurice Tempelsman, former chair of the AAI Board of Trustees who accepted the AAI Distinguished Trustee Award and Nik Amarteifio, CEO & Chairman of Equatorial Cross Acquisitions Ltd., who received the AAI 2012 Distinguished Alumnus Award.

The AAI 2012 Distinguished Alumna Award was presented to Dr. Thelma Awori, Founding Chair and Co-President of the Sirleaf Market Women’s Fund.

The Africa-America Institute has since October 1st, 2012, Amini Kajunju, former CEO of Workshop in Business Opportunities, as the organization’s new President and CEO. She succeeded Mora McLean who stepped down after 16 years of service.
