Lusaka, Zambia (PANA) – Zambian President Edgar Lungu, who underwent a successful surgery on Friday at a Pretoria hospital in South Africa to treat a condition known as Achalasia, has been discharged.

President Lungu’s special assistant for press and public relations, Amos Chanda, said in a statement issued from Pretoria that President Lungu was discharged Saturday after specialist doctors certified him fit to resume full duties.

“The President underwent a successful medical procedure on March 13, 2015. The Presidency is working on arrangements for his return to Lusaka,” the statement said.

President Lungu was being treated for a condition known as Achalasia which caused the narrowing of his food pipe.

President Lungu fell ill on Sunday while officiating at the International Women’s Day celebrations at the Heroes Stadium in Lusaka.

The Zambian leader was flown to South Africa on Tuesday where he was admitted to a Pretoria hospital the same day, after Zambian doctors recommended that he seeks further treatment abroad.
