What Immigration reform means for Africans

L-R: Panelists Bourema Niambele, Opal Tometi, and Olubunmi Segun

By Isseu Diouf Campbell

African Communities Together hosted a forum on the impact of the new immigration bill on the African community living in the US, on May 07, 2013 at the Bronx Community College.

The organization’s founder Amaha Kassa moderated a panel discussion featuring Bourema Niambele, African Advisory Council of the Bronx, Opal Tometi, Black Immigration Network, and Olubunmi Segun, staff attorney at African Services Committee.

Even though many undocumented immigrants and their supporters greeted favorably the introduction of the bill, panelists agreed on one thing: “this is just a proposal not a law and the fight is far from being over.”

African Communities Together also provided one on one consultation with lawyers, free Hepatitis screening by African Services Committee, and high blood pressure check up with the Asian society health initiative.

African Communities Together (ACT) is a civil rights organization of immigrants and refugees from sub-Saharan Africa and their families.
