Nairobi, Kenya (PANA) – The U.S. Department of State has extended to Kenyans the validity of Non-Immigrant Visas (NIVs) for temporary stay in the United States.

Also to benefit from the extension are students accepted by a Student and Exchange Visitor Programme (SEVP).

The change increases visa validity from one year to five years, and went into effect on September 22, 2015.

The Embassy said during the first week of the new validity period, more than 600 Kenyans received five-year NIVs.

The extended validity marks the fulfillment of one of the commitments announced during President Barack Obama’s July 2015 visit to Kenya.

Obama is an American of Kenyan ancestry. He is the son of the late Barack Obama Sr., who hailed from Kogelo village in western Kenya.

The government of Kenya has, on a reciprocal basis, extended to five years visitor visa validity for Americans traveling to Kenya.
