Zimbabwe’s Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai has filed a petition at the Constitution Court seeking the nullification of last Wednesday’s president election, which was won by President Robert Mugabe.
Tsvangirai, of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T), filed the court papers on Friday, alleging irregularities with the voters’ roll as well as rigging by the ruling ZANU-PF of President Mugabe.
The main opposition leader alleged that President Mugabe bribed voters with food and household items, which is a breach of the electoral laws, according to local media reports here.
The court is expected to make a final decision on the matter within 14 days, according to the country’s new constitution.
Until the court decides on the petition, President Mugabe, 89, cannot be inaugurated for his fresh five-year term.
The Zimbabwe Election Commission (ZEC) said President Mugabe won the presidential poll with 61%, compared to 33% by Tsvangirai.
The Mugabe’s party also won 158 out of 210 seats in the parliament.
