After the recent military ousting of Egypt’s President Mohammed Morsi, the citizens of the North African nation have taken to the streets protests and rallies, raising questions about the state of human rights and the divisive tendencies of a fledging democratic institution.

On August 1st, 2013, nonprofit news organization Global Information Network hosted an evening roundtable to examine the crisis in Egypt.

Among the panelists present were Tseliso Thipanyane, South Africa human rights specialist, Tamara Al-Rifai, North Africa advocacy director for Human Rights Watch, Milton Allimadi, publisher and editor of Black Star News, Danny Schechter, filmmaker, journalist and publisher of MediaChannel.org, and Osama Abdel-Khalek, Deputy Permanent Representative of Egypt.

Sowore Omoyele, the founder of the Sahara Reporters Media Group, moderated the roundtable held in Manhattan.
