Lomé, Togo (PANA) – The Collective Let’s save Togo (CST), a grouping of political opposition parties and human rights organizations, has called on the international community to put pressure on authorities in Lome to honor their pledge to undertake political reforms, promised since 2004 in Brussels, Belgium.

“In the interest of peace and reconciliation, the CST calls on Togo’s partners, particularly ECOWAS and the G5 (France, Germany, USA, UNDP and EU) to urge the government to act now and undertake reforms,” the CST said in a statement issued Thursday.

The appeal comes after the rejection, on 30 June, of a draft bill on a constitutional revision proposed by the government.

The CST denounced what it called “manipulation by the government”, saying that the situation could lead the country to uncertain future.

It called on the government to undertake and complete the reforms before next year’s elections.

Sources said that from May 19  to June 2, the opposition and the government had engaged in a series of talks on institutional and constitutional reforms which conclusions will be submitted to Parliament.

They said “No consensus resulted from those talks.”
