“It’s time for African scientists to use African knowledge to solve African problems” – Mauritian President Ameenah Gurib-Fakim

Mauritian President Ameenah Gurib-Fakim on Monday said that now is the time for African scientists to play a central role in using African knowledge to solve African problems using African resources.

Speaking at a two-day seminar in Port-Louis on ‘Transitioning from green economies to greener societies through Science’, Mrs. Gurib- Fakim said “one such resource is also African traditional information”.

“When we talk about transitioning to green societies, it is also timely to recognize that we have not given sufficient importance to traditional knowledge to the same extent that other countries such as India and China have done. Our region has enough biodiversity to respond to the call of an industry for innovative ingredients,” she emphasized.

According to the Mauritian President, Science, Technology, Innovation and Research cannot, in whatsoever manner, be dissociated from the concepts of green economies, green societies and sustainable development.
