London, United Kingdom – South African firms have won the top four positions on the list of the most valuable brands in Africa, following a survey by the pan-African African Business magazine.

According to the survey, carried out in partnership with Brand Africa, Brand Finance Africa and TNS, telecommunications company MTN, and three retailers – Woolworths, Shoprite and Pick n Pay – won the first four places, in that order.

Nigerian telecommunications firm Globacom placed fifth, followed by South Africa’s Castle beer and Tusker, owned by East African Breweries.

As revealed last month at the African Business Awards ceremony, organised by African Business magazine, Brand Africa awarded MTN and Coca Cola the prize for the best brands in Africa.

The survey also found that brands originating in Africa are not only holding their own against international household names, but in some instances outperform the international brands.

The rankings have major implications as they demonstrate why some brands are regarded more highly than others by consumers.
