Cape Town, South Africa – South African aid group Gift of the Givers on Monday confirmed that it has released US$200,000 for essential supplies for victims of the deadly typhoon in the Philippines.

In addition, it is sending a medical team to help treat the injured.

Super Typhoon Haiyan, which struck the Philippines this weekend, killed at least 10,000 people and left hundreds of thousands displaced.

South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma has sent his condolences to the island nation and President Benigno Aquino.

“During this time of pain and suffering, particularly in the case of those who have lost loved ones, please be assured that the Government and people of South Africa share in your sorrow.

”We trust that the resilience of the people of the Philippines, that has seen them through very difficult times in the past, will help them overcome this great loss and devastation,” President Zuma said in a statement.
