Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – The former head of Rwandan military’s external intelligence service has been found strangled in a luxury Johannesburg hotel.

Although the South African police have yet to comment on the matter, the Rwanda National Congress (RNC) issued a statement saying Col. Patrick Karegeya’s body was discovered in a hotel where he went for a meeting.

Frank Ntwali, the party’s chairperson, claimed he had been strangled by agents of President Paul Kagame.

Karegeya’s body was found at the Michelangelo Towers, a top hotel north of the city.

It was not immediately clear if he was killed on Tuesday night or on Wednesday.

From 1994 to 2004, Karegeya was Director General, External Intelligence in the Rwandan Defence Forces.

He was stripped of his rank of Colonel in 2006 by a military tribunal and fled the country in 2007.

Later, President Kagame claimed that he was in the pay of South African military intelligence.

Another prominent Rwandan exile in South Africa, Faustin Kayumba Nyamwasa, survived two assassination attempts in June 2010.
