South Africa: Govt. to challenge damning report on Zuma

Pretoria, South Africa (PANA) – With just five weeks to South Africa’s general elections, tensions are sky-high between the ruling African National Congress (ANC) and the official opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) over the latest scandal involving President Jacob Zuma.

Both Zuma and his party have been hit hard over the US$20 million upgrade to his private residence with taxpayer’s money.

However, government on Tuesday indicated that it will challenge the damning 445-page findings of Public Protector Thuli Madonsela that Zuma unduly benefited from the upgrade of his private Nkandla home.

Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa, who was fingered in the report, said “inaccuracies” had been identified in Madonsela’s report.

The DA, which is milking the scandal for all its worth, is calling for a full repayment plan by Zuma to be tabled in Parliament for the monies he owes taxpayers as a result of the project which snowballed overt the past couple of years.

DA parliamentary leader Lindiwe Mazibuko, said her party was seeking legal advice on what recourse there is to ensure that Zuma and all other implicated parties comply fully with the recommendations in the report.

The Freedom Front Plus has also entered the fray by calling for an urgent parliamentary debate on the Public Protector’s report.
