Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – South Africa’s city of Cape Town at midnight on New Year’s Eve became the World Design Capital (WDC) 2014 with a magnificent festival and fireworks display that was beamed around the world.

The WDC is a biannual honour awarded by the International Council for Societies of Industrial Design to cities across the globe to show their commitment to using design as a social, cultural and economic development tool.

The theme for this year’s event is “Live Design. Transform Life”.

As the winning city, Cape Town will plan, develop and promote a programme of events to run throughout 2014 focusing on using design as a development tool.

The city hosted a free concert with lasers, fireworks and a special tribute to Nelson Mandela who died three weeks ago.

Images of the liberation hero’s life were projected onto the Cape Town City Hall, where he gave his first speech after his release from 27 years in prison in 1990.

City Mayor Patricia De Lille paid a glowing tribute to Mandela, saying his legacy lives on through the design event which will showcase the city to the entire planet.
