Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – American boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr., who is undefeated as a professional, arrived in South Africa on Wednesday for a week-long visit which will see him promoting the sport in the country.
It will be Mayweather’s first visit to Africa and he is expected to attend the South African sports awards ceremony in Johannesburg on Saturday, take part in an exhibition match at a gymnasium in Soweto visit former President Nelson Mandela’s prison on Robben Island off Cape Town.
PANA reports that the 36-year-old will also visit the cities of Bloemfontein and East London, where the sport is extremely popular.
In his last fight in September, Mayweather outclassed Canelo Alvarez to take his fight record to 45-0 (with 26 knockouts), and received a US$41 million payday for his efforts – the highest ever in the history of the sport.
Born Floyd Joy Sinclair 24 Feb. 1977, Mayweather is a five-division world champion, having won eight world titles and the lineal championship in three different weight classes.
He is a two-time Ring magazine Fighter of the Year (winning the award in 1998 and 2007); the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA) Fighter of the Year award (2007) and the Best Fighter ESPY Award (2007, 2008, 2010, 2012 and
2013).
He is the WBC welterweight champion, WBA super welterweight champion and WBC Super welterweight champion.
