Rwanda’s adult literacy rate reaches 86 percent

Rwanda’s adult literacy rate has increased to 86 percent of the population in 2016, but illiterate people in rural areas still prefer to devote more of their spare time to productive activities rather than attending literacy classes, according to an official report.

The Ministry of Education reported increased public awareness of the need for literacy but noted that lack of electricity, coupled with weak structure and support for adult education planning at local levels impeded progress.

According to the report, computer literacy rates were significantly higher in urban than in rural areas, with estimated rates of 26% against 4.3% of the general population respectively.
