Rwandan lawyers seek justice for colleague shot dead by police

The Rwanda Bar Association has said it is demanding answers from the police after one of its members, Toy Ntabwoba Nzamwita, was shot dead during the weekend by a police officer for an alleged traffic offence.

In a statement issued in Kigali on Tuesday, the representative of the lawyers, Amida Furaha, insisted that the police should “conduct a detailed and quick investigation into the death of our colleague” so that those responsible could be brought to justice.

The statement said Nzamwita may have violated traffic rules but that should not be a reason to kill him.

Nzamwita was killed on New Year’s Eve after he allegedly “violated traffic rules” in Kimihurura, a suburb of Kigali city.

Reacting to the tragic shooting, the Commissioner for Traffic and Road Safety (TRS) department, George Rumanzi, warned that the world was evolving where terrorists used varied means to carry out terror activities during which vehicles were used to move to public places and blow up people.

“When a vehicle rams into a check point at night and proceeds to a restricted area, there should be a way of stopping it because you can’t be sure what it is carrying,” the police statement quoted Commissioner of Police Rumanzi as saying.
