On Tuesday, March 29, 2022, President Biden signed into law H.R. 55, the “Emmett Till Antilynching Act,” which makes lynching a federal hate crime.
Black 14-year-old teenager Emmett Till was lynched in 1955 for allegedly making sexual advances on a white woman named Carolyn Bryant Donham.
His mother chose to have his casket open during his funeral to show the world the atrocity done to his son.
The perpetrators of the lynching have never been held accountable.
