Police warn Botswana citizens of hoaxers on social media

Gaborone, Botswana (PANA) – Botswana Police Service (BPS) has warned the public against hoax promises now rampant on social media.

Christopher Mbulawa, BPS spokesperson, said on Monday that the criminals lure their potential victims by promising large amounts of money.

“Police investigations reveal that suspects usually befriend their victim through social media to an extent of earning their trust. The suspects, who usually claim to be staying abroad, would then inform the victim that the suspects had posted them material presents (including money),” Mbulawa said.

According to the police, victims are usually requested to pay some money as tax clearance for the release of such goods.

“That is where the catch is as all that are empty promises meant to milk the victim of their money,” Mbulawa said, warning that the public should avoid engaging in conversations with strangers through social media.
