Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – Judge Thokozile Masipa granted Oscar Pistorius on Friday afternoon extended bail while he awaits sentencing, on October 13, for his culpable homicide conviction.

Judge Masipa said that the State had failed to prove their claim that Pistorius was a flight risk or could attempt suicide.

She said this after prosecutor Gerrie Nel said Pistorius had sold his two properties and that a state psychologist had determined that he is a suicide risk.

He said that due to the serious nature of a culpable homicide conviction meant that in the interest of justice, the Paralympian should be imprisoned immediately.

Earlier on Friday, the North Gautend High court found him guilty of culpable homicide for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp at his Pretoria home on Valentine’s Day last year.

Meanwhile, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) on Friday said the conviction would have no negative impact on the organization.

“Since it started, this trial has no impact on our activities,” IPC chief executive Xavier Gonzalez said in a statement on Friday. “That will not change. Oscar was a fundamental ambassador of the Paralympic movement in the period between 2008 and 2012. Since then the Paralympic movement has many other ambassadors and many other athletes that have been recognised globally.”
