New militant group wants oil companies to quit Niger Delta region in seven days

A new militant group, Adaka Boro Avengers, on Thursday gave oil companies in Nigeria’s Niger Delta a seven days ultimatum to vacate the region or be ready for “total calamity” on staff and oil installations.

In a statement signed by its spokesman, Edmos Ayayeib, the group said that the Federal Government and the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) should ask all multinational oil companies operating in the Niger Delta region to evacuate from the territory.

The group claimed that it was forced to give the ultimatum because of an alleged statement on surveillance contract, reportedly credited to the president of NUPENG, Mr. Igwe Achese, and also failure of the federal government to implement demands made by the Niger Delta leaders during their meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to the statement, Achese’s advice asking the federal government to engage the service of a security outfit managed by some ex-militants in the Niger Delta for the security of crude oil facilities in region, was a slap to the Niger Delta agitators and could lead to fresh crisis in the region.
