Maputo, Mozambique (PANA) – The Mozambican Parliament has unanimously passed a bill on the right for information, which obliges all public and private media operating in public interest to provide information sought by citizens, official sources said Friday in Maputo.

The bill, approved Thursday, stipulates in one of its articles that “public and private entities concerned by the current legislation have the right to release for the general public interest and public domain information, through the different means legally authorized and which are accessible to citizens.”

Such information includes annual budgets and their implementation reports, audit reports, inspection of union activities, environmental evaluation reports, the minutes on public contracts and tender bills, signed agreements as well as the country’s taxes and expenditure.

The bill on right for information is a result of the initiative undertaken by the branch of the Media Institute for Southern Africa (MISA) in Mozambique, which submitted its draft to Parliament eight years ago.
