The Rwandan ministry of Health on Thursday banned all medical personnel from using their cell phones while at work.
In a statement, the ministry said that effective March 1, Rwanda healthcare providers are prohibited from using personal phones during “working hours”.
However, some medical personnel said the ban would amount to an infringement of personal rights.
But officials in the ministry argue that the new measure aims to enforce “all rules, policies, and regulations as stated in the code of conduct for all medical personnel in the country”.
Latest official figures indicate that Rwanda parades one doctor per 16,046 Rwandans by the end of 2015.
The East African nation is also targeting to meet the one physician per 10,000 populations ratio by 2020.
