Nouakchott, Mauritania (PANA) – A member of the Initiative for the Resurgence of the Abolitionist Movement (IRA) in Mauritania, Hamdy Ould Lehbous, has denounced the “harassment and detention” of some human rights activists from different associations in the country.

In a statement issued Saturday, Lehbous said the incident happened on Friday afternoon, when the activists from several NGOs visited the village of Wothie, 325km South-east of the capital.

The activists had converged on the tombs of victims of extra-judiciary killings from 1989 to 1992 during the regime of Maouya Ould Sid’Ahmed Ahamed Taya.

He said the ceremony was disrupted by the police, who fired teargas on the activists. Also, many of them were detained for hours.

IRA’s leader Biram Ould Dah Ould Abeida, who won the UN Human Rights Prize in 2013, was among the activists.
