Botswana Innovation Hub (BIH) has signed an agreement with Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), as the Hub makes strides to become a regional technology commercialisation centre.

Signed in the capital Gaborone on Tuesday, the collaboration will see BIH share technical cooperation through mutual assistance and promotion of technical cooperation with KAIST.

According to the two institutions the technical cooperation is to build a cooperative network between Korea and Botswana with the aim of promoting global technology transfer and commercialisation.

“The parties will develop technology commercialisation business models and support business activities for participating companies and agencies to implement and expand partnership opportunities in both Korea and Botswana,” said Director of Global Commercialisation Centre (GCC) at KAIST, Professor Munkee Choi.

Commenting on the memorandum of understanding BIH’s chief executive officer, Allan Boshwaen, said: “Networks and collaborations between academia, public and private sectors help build a vibrant national innovation ecosystem and we are happy with this latest endorsement as a regional technology commercialisation center.”

BIH is a parastatal incorporated to develop and ultimately operate the country’s first Science and Technology Park, expected to be operational before the end of the year.
