Ivorian President Allassane Ouattara honored at Africa-America Institute’s 30th Annual Awards Gala

President Allassane Ouattara received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Africa-America Institute’s 30th Annual Awards Gala held on September 22, 2014 at Gotham Hall in Manhattan.

Ouattara, an AAI alumnus, expressed his gratitude and promised during his acceptance speech to “find ways to contribute to a fund to help African universities through the Africa-America Institute.”

Other honorees of the annual black tie event included Thandika Mkandawire, a leading scholar and researcher on African development, who was presented with the AAI 2014 Distinguished Alumnus Award.

Banker and international business lawyer, Vivienne Yeda, also director-general of the East African Development Bank (EADB), accepted the AAI 2014 Business Leader Award.

Finally General Electric received the AAI 2014 Corporate Responsibility Award.

The dinner hosted by CNN International anchor Isha Sesay featured a performance by South African singer Yvonne Chaka Chaka and a Conversation on Africa, moderated by VOA “Straight Talk Africa” host Shaka Ssali, on the gala theme, “Powering Africa’s Future through Regional and Global Partnerships” with gala honorees Vivienne Yeda, Thandika Mkandawire, and Jay Ireland of GE.
