[Gambia’s Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) on Thursday approved three candidates for the country presidential election on December 1, 2016.
They are Mamma Kandeh of Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC), Adama Barrow, an independent candidate backed by eight political parties, and incumbent Yahya Jammeh of the ruling APRC.
Speaking Thursday at the IEC, Jammeh said the process of election in Gambia is among the best in the world. He invited all observers to attest the poll, urging the IEC to let officials of all political parties to witness the voting and counting of ballots on election day.
Jammeh said this is the second presidential election held in Gambia without assistance of Western countries.
“The outside world and those that champion democracy believe that I will win, therefore they are not willing to support the elections. But let them know that Allah will sponsor all our elections,” President Jammeh said.
