Brussels, Belgium (PANA) – The European Union has urged Morocco to complete “as soon as possible” the ratification procedure of the new fishing deal concluded recently by the two parties.

The Moroccan Parliament has already ratified the new fishing deal and it remains the signing by the King to complete the ratification process.

The European Union spokesperson, Hélène Banner, said the last fishing agreement between EU and Morocco expired two years ago and as long as Morocco would not complete the ratification process, European fishing boats will not be able to fish in Moroccan territorial waters.

Under the four-year agreement the new fishing deal would enable 126 boats from 11 European countries to fish in Moroccan territorial waters.

In addition, Morocco should benefit from a financial compensation of 30 million Euros in exchange for access of European fishing vessels to Moroccan waters.

The new fishing deal increases the annual fishing quota from 60,000 to 80,000 tonnes for European fishermen.
