Many countries in Africa are striving towards achieving the sustainable goals and climate change is one of the greatest threats to achieving sustainable development, a senior official of the U.N. Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) said Friday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The Director for ECA’s Special Initiatives Division(SID), Fatima Denton, told experts, meeting ahead of the scoping session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), that it is important for the panel to find ways of threading sustainable development and climate action, particularly mitigation, in the same needle to leverage climate action.

Bringing together 200 experts from some 60 countries, the session will be held from 1- 5 May 2017 in Addis Ababa to draft the outline of the Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) of the IPCC, which, according to Ms. Denton, should support African countries in their developmental trajectories.
