Dangote and top Nigerian business leaders pledge US$24m towards meeting MDGs

Abuja, Nigeria (PANA) – Top Nigerian business leaders, led by Africa’s richest man Aliko Dangote, pledged on Thursday a total of US$24 million to save one million lives under a multi-sectoral coalition aimed at collectively improving health outcomes.

Dangote, on behalf of the founding board of the Private Sector Health Alliance of Nigeria (PSHAN), said at the Joint Advocacy and Commitment Declaration that the pledged sum is part of the commitment of the group “to kick off the implementation of saving one million lives initiatives in Nigeria and to ensure that we meet our collective goals, including meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) 4,5 and 6 in 2015.

“Nigeria needs about US$56.5 million over the next two years in meeting health-related MDGs, starting with 14 pilots states selected for the programme. The fund is aimed at making a declaration to meet the MDGs though advocacy and tap into health market potentials in Nigeria.”
