Côte d’Ivoire to open humanitarian corridors with Ebola-hit neighbours

Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire (PANA) – The Ivorian National Security Council (CNS) has decided to open humanitarian, economic and health corridors with neighbouring countries affected by the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), the Council has announced.

The decision was taken at an extraordinary meeting on the management of Ebola, presided over President Alassane Ouattara, Monday evening.

On August 22, 2014, CNS decided to shut the country’s borders with Guinea and Liberia, two of the five West African countries affected by the EVD.

In opening the corridors, however, CNS said it took note of the decisions and recommendations of the Health Ministers from the Economic Community of West African countries (ECOWAS), who met in Ghana’s capital, Accra, August 28, 2014.

EVD has killed over 1,500 people mostly in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone and, to a less extent, in Nigeria.

The disease has also spread to Senegal.
