Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire (PANA) – The mother of former Ivorian president Laurent Gbagbo died Wednesday while returning from exile in Ghana.

Mrs. Marguerite Gado, who is over 90, was in a critical situation in Ghana, where she has lived for four years and wished to die in her village, according to Interior Minister Ahmed Bakayoko.

“A medical ambulance was proposed to the family, but they changed their mind and decided to take an ordinary vehicle. They had to stop at Yamoussoukro, where she died at 7:45,” he explained.

President Alassane Ouattara’s government has expressed its condolences to the Gbagbo family, the Minister said.

Gbagbo is awaiting trial at the International Criminal Court at The Hague, where he has been detained for several years.

Gbagbo faces charges of murder, rape, attempted murder and persecution.
