The Caribbean Women’s Health Association hosted “Who Runs the World? Girls!” – a girls empowerment and mentorship symposium – on May 12, 2012 at St. Francis College in Brooklyn, New York.

Highlights of the event were lectures by Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke and Aletha Maybank, assistant commissioner of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

The daylong program kept parents and children busy. Parents attended two workshops – one on helping children create a personal development plan and another on how to talk to children about sex – while girls, ages 10 to 19, attended sessions on education, healthy relationships, reproductive health, and nutrition and fitness.

Both achieved women emphasized on sisterhood, self-confidence, determination, perseverance and dreaming big.

The event ended with a mentoring session and the presentation of gifts.
