Nairobi, Kenya (PANA) – Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta joined East African leaders at an emergency Summit on the political crisis in Burundi Sunday.

The East African leaders agreed to convene another crisis Summit on Burundi after their meeting on May 13, in Dar es Salaam, the Tanzanian capital, which ended before an attempted coup in Bujumbura.

The leaders are trying to forestall a deepening political crisis since Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza announced a third-term bid and won the backing of the courts to actualize his bid.

During the May 13 Summit, the East African Community (EAC) leaders condemned the attempt to overthrow the government of President Nkurunziza and asked him to delay the elections.

The elections are scheduled for June 26 but the East African leaders called for the postponement of the presidential elections until August to allow time for political temperatures to cool down.

The crisis in Burundi has uprooted several people from their homes, leading to a growing humanitarian crisis with most of them fleeing to Rwanda and Tanzania to escape the violence.

At least 30 people have been killed on the streets of the capital since civilians poured into the streets to protest against President Nkurunziza’s third-term bid.
